Abstract: | Analysis of certain processes of social change in urban Africa, utilizing the framework of role theory and focusing upon role formation and change at individual and group levels. Examples of individual adjustments and adaptations to stress or conflict among roles, and of role changes over successive generations, are provided from data obtained through research with Hausa women in Northern Nigeria (1980-81). Finally, suggestions are formulated for use in social and development activities. This exploratory paper aims to develop hypotheses with reference to data collected rather than to test hypotheses formally; an additional goal is to consider the consequences of such hypotheses, if true, for social and economic development. |
