Abstract:Upon suggestions by C.M.S. missionaries, the Alaafin of Oyo and other Yoruba rulers asked the British in Lagos to intervene in the Yoruba wars. This intervention enabled the British to establish their sovereignty over Oyo and other parts of Yoruba land. The author discusses factors obstructing and factors helping the cause of Islam in the first years of the colonial regime.
