Abstract:After having briefly exposed the Somali dispute, the article sets out the importance of the referendum of March 1967 for it. Ethiopia's interest in the future of French Somaliland depends fundamentally on economic grounds; for the Somali Republic what is really at stake is ethnic solidarity and the furtherance of Pan-Somali unification. The future of French Somaliland could provide the key to a more general solution of the whole Somali issue, at least between Ethiopia and the Republic. Ultimately what is needed is for some joint American and Russian initiative with French participation to bring all the parties together in a real effort to reach a settlement.
