Abstract: | In a preface, by J. Marcum, the economic and political aspects of the new agreement concluded on December 9, 1971, between the USA and the Government of Portugal which, in return for massive economic assistance, extends American base rights in the Azores until February 3, 1974. If America's new financial intrusion buoyed Lisbon's politicians, businessmen and generals, it came as a bitter blow to African independence movements. Allied with the people's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the Independence Party of Guiné (Bissau) and the Cape Verde Islands (PAIGC) has proved a resourceful revolutionary adversary. PAIGC official Gil Fernandes assesses here the significance of the new Luso-American accord in terms of the anti-colonial wars in Portuguese Africa. Notes. |
