Abstract: | Clear distinctions between varieties of colonial African response to the implanting of colonial regimes can and should be made not simply between traditional and modern resistance or nationalist leadership strata in Africa, but also between leaderships arising during modern movements alone. One of the influences contributing to changes within colonial African leadership was American study sojourns. This story of the emergence of anti-colonial elites, which is embedded in the history of Western missions, Afro-American missionaries, and African educational institutions, is exposed in the study.
