Abstract: | The visit of the East German state and party leader Erich Honecker to Ethiopia on 13 November 1979 was symbolic of the increasingly important role the German Democratic Republic is playing in Africa. Primarily in Ethiopia, Angola and Mozambique, the GDR has developed a broad-based presence as well as extremely close co-operation on a number of fronts over the past three years. This article deals with the relatively recent development of the East German presence in Africa; Political groundwork - Economic links - Military involvement. Notes. |
