Abstract: | On 20 January 1986, troops under the command of Major-General Lekhanya seized power in Lesotho and ousted the Prime Minister, Chief Jonathan, from office. There can be no doubt about the importance of the part played by Pretoria in the coup, both indirectly and directly. The gradual imposition of rigorously enforced border restrictions temporarily crippled the Lesotho economy, precipitating a political crisis that paved the way for the assumption of power by the kingdom's security force. Under its new Government, Lesotho's military rulers have adopted a pragmatic stance vis-a-vis Pretoria. The most visible change has been a noticeable decline in anti-Pretoria rhetoric. The indications are, however, that Lesotho's new administration will not be wholly subservient to the South Africans. Notes, réf. |
