| Abstract: | It is generally accepted that colonial rule caused a profound change in the quality of Akan political life. In this paper the author tests these assumptions concerning the regularity of the mechanism of succession to Akan paramount stools during the colonial period, drawing on the testimony presented at the many disputes which occurred this period. The conclusion is that colonial rule involved little fundamental change from earlier practices. Notes, summary. |
