Abstract: | This essay is not so much a comprehensive study of Akan jurisprudence as an attempt to examine Akan law as revealed in Akan judicial process and an analysis of certein aspects of this law. For this purpose, the essay is divided into two parts, viz. 1. A brief exposition of the composition and personnel of the Akan courts - i.e. prior to their juridical transformation under colonial administration by the Gold Coast Native Jurisdiction Ordinance, 1883, and the Ashanti Administration Ordinance, 1902; and 2. An analysis of the law applied in these courts and one aspect of Akan procedure, namely, the commencement of proceedings by the socalled 'oath' procedure. Notes and rel.
