Abstract: | A paradox exists in the Egyptian labor market. It is stereotyped labor surplus economy, where 350.000 school leavers enter the labor market each year, with 1.5 million openly unemployed, and widespread underemployment. Yet, at the same time, official estimates only give 600.000 Egyptian worker abroad - this small total despite acknowledged widespread shortages of labor in the capital rich, labor importing countries.Sections: Introductory - Employment in Egypt -Present patterns of labor migration - The exports of labor; interaction with the domestic labor market - Causes of segmentations of the urban labor market - The implications of the hypthesis (of unusually limited occupational mobility).
