Abstract:Within the broad Marxist discussion on imperialism and colonialism, only marginal attention is paid to capitalist relations of the settler-colonial type. The long-term influence of classical Marxist theory was partly responsible for the failure of recent discussions to take up this issue. This paper reopens the discussion on the 'settler economy' as a special form of capitalism. Sections: on the notion of 'settler mode of production' - the genesis of the settler colonial mode of production - class structure and class formation - a special type of capitalist relations - settler colonialism and imperialism - the relationships between settler colonialism and metropoles - postscript (August 1980). Notes.
