Abstract: | Offering a solution to the problem of the origin of the name 'Hausa' the author compares the Hausa language with that of Songhai. The Songhai word for 'east' is 'hausa'. 'Hausa' also has the connotations of 'left bank of river' and 'bush' and it may be that for Songhai-speakers there was an added, pejorative significance of 'bushmen'. Originally a Songhai word for 'savages' the term 'Hausa' became for the Afunawa, in a period of new national consciousness, the designation of their national entity. Notes, French summary. |
