Abstract: | Presents some additional material on LoWiili marriage payments to supplement the norms given in the A.'s earlier publication 'The Social Organization of the Lowiili' (1956). The material used was collected in July 1966. Discussed are some of the organizational changes that have occured overtime. Consideration is given to important structural changes in the area and their effects on marriage payments. The information on marriage payments still being far from satisfactory, some alternative ways of collecting such data are examined. Shown is that a) the 'normative' and 'recollected' payments are very similar, b) cross-cousins receive no better terms, but men of influence do, c) the older men are losing their percentage share of available women to the younger men. Incidentally the difference between the normative and 'actual' preferences for the two types of cross-cousin marriage is explained. Ref., tables, French summary. |
