Abstract: | Examines the institution of polygyny within the framework of the struggle against sexism. First, the author describes the characteristics of polygyny in modern Africa (residence - education and occupation - religion - age - modern polygyny) and next the official attitudes and actions toward polygyny. Polygyny as embodied in customary laws relegates women to an inferior legal status. The key factor in making polygyny fair is to require a wife's legal consent to a husband's subsequent marriages.
