Abstract: | The present paper seeks to provide the background to the role played by the Swazi traditional leadership in the early colonial period. It offers a summary, based on published sources, of Swazi traditional political organisation in the nineteenth century. On the basis of this, it suggests an interpretation of the internal political alignments and rivalries of later 19th century Swaziland. Finally, the paper discusses how the Swazi traditional authorities lost their political independence as well as their control over the economy without, however, forfeithing their position as the Swazi ruling group. It is suggested that an appreciation of the role of the Swazi traditional leadership in Swazi affairs both in precolonial and colonial times is of supreme importance for an understanding of Swazi response to colonialism.
