Abstract: | The Entente Cordiale of 1904 was an agreement on reconcilable Anglo-French colonial differences in various parts of the world. After this date there was a closer rapprochement and ah identification of common interests between the two powers; and this of course meant that, ideally, on issues for discussion between Britain and France on the one hand, and between the two and another power, say Germany, on the other, their attitude might be governed by this new detente. The Gambia was part of the 1904 package deal, and what this article seeks to do is to show the practical difficulties attendant on an agreement like this, such as the problem of implementing the provisions agreed upon. On a broader perspective also, the paper discusses the future of The Gambia and its bearing on the relationship between Britain and France. In other words the author looks at how the Entente worked in practice. Notes. |
