Abstract: | The task in this paper is to examine what role the provident Fund played in the industrial life of the indigenous railway servants between 1915 and 1943 when the Fund was their Scheme for social security just as the Pension Provision served their counterparts in the Civil Service. Starting with an account of railway workers' agitation before the Administration conceded the Provident Fund, the paper attempts a detailed analysis of the Fund and discusses the struggle for its change when with the growing significance of trade unionism in the Nigerian Railway the contributors denounced it as a bad alternative to the Pension Scheme.
