Abstract:The question of indigenous plant medicine and some of the myths surrounding it are examined, in particular in the case of Ghana. The author, a chemist, stresses the need for a proper, systematic scientific and clinical examination of the claims attributed to plants. It is necessary to bring home to people the hard realities of herbal medical practice and what is involved in any meaningful research in this field, and to avoid the sensationalism which has hitherto characterised pronouncements on this subject.
