Abstract:Examination of the effects of maternal age, education, and parity on birthweight distribution in a Nigerian community, using a representative sample of 418 deliveries at the Government Maternity Hospital in Ilorin, between the months of April and September 1980. The application of bivariate analysis suggested that all three variables had significant effects on birthweight. However, a multivariate analysis of the data suggested that, among the three variables, only maternal education has significant independent effects on birthweight and that the significant effect previously observed for maternal age and parity through bivariate analysis is spurious.
