Abstract:Apart from the increasing demands by women for general improvements in their status, the elite among them are even more specific; they want a more egalitarian form of matrimonial relationship and possibly the equation of their status to that of men. The purpose of this article is to examine the extent to which these ambitions can be, and are being realized within the existing local legal frameworks, and in order to do this, a consideration of the legal status of women in Nigeria is presented.
