Abstract:This paper explores the position of women in the fast growing towns of Subsaharan Africa. An attempt is made to evaluate and to integrate the available information. First, briefly, the changes that affect the position of women in Subsaharan Africa are discussed, in an attempt to evaluate the impact of these changes in the urban setting. Then two themes are explored: the opportunities for economic independence of urban women, and the urban family. A short discussion of if the policy implications of sex discrimination in education and occupation concludes this article. Notes.
