Abstract: | A study of the plays of Ngugi wa Thiongo reveals unstinted efforts to transform the negative image of African womanhood from passivity to social responsibility, from an inferior partner in family and nation building to an equal partner. The best way to understand his treatment of women is to look at each play in terms of its cultural, or historical matrix, to examine the problems posed by the society to the key male and female characters, and to evaluate the involvement of the characters in the resolution of their problems.
