Abstract: | The Jihad led by 'Uthman b. Fudi against the rulers of the Central Sudan at the beginning the 19th century had as its principal aim the reform of Muslim Society. 'Uthman in his writings touched on every aspect.of society. He paid special attention to the role of women in Islamic Law as he interpreted it. His views have greatly influenced attitudes to women in the former Northern Region of Nigeria. After a short note on the position of women in the Central Sudan prior to the Jihad follow seetions in which 'Uthman b. Fudi' attitudes about the status of Muslim women are exposed. Ref. |
