Abstract: | Somali women compose poetry but it is a special type of poetry which is not considered serious enough for the taste of the nomadic man. One form of female poetry is the hobeeyo: a lullaby sung to children. It is a multi-purpose song: the mother is always addressing someone else too. The first part of this article surveys a cross section of the hobeeyo. The second part describes the picture depicted by male Somali poets about women, which is not any different than that of the West. Bibliogr., notes. |
