Abstract: | Presenting some facts and figures on the rapid expansion of education in Lesotho during the last decade, the author points out that teachers' salaries in Lesotho: 1) have been influenced by expatriate salaries and are, therefore, related more to European economic standards; 2) are too high in relation to the gross domestic product; 3) have built-in annual increments; 4) have no regard for economic productivity; 5) have excessively high differentials and yet 6) they tend to be generally lower than salaries offered in the public service. The author concludes with an examination of alternatives and solutions that might be adopted by the country to meet the ducational problem. Ref., table. |
