Abstract:Within the complex processes of acculturation affecting education, there is the mingling of three cultural streams: 1. the indigenous African society in which education was inseparable m from the way of living, 2. the Islamic culture, with education simply organised but hardly distinguishable from the all-pervading religious way of living, 3. Western education, introduced by Christian missionaries, and bringing very different individual and social values. This article is mainly concerned with those societies in which the indigenous culture has been overlaid by Islamic or western influences, or both, and the implications of this for the planning of education. Sections: Traditional versus modern education Education for what kind of society? - Two different approaches: self-reliance and self-help - The limitations of planning - Problems of 'outside aid' - Improving educational planning in Africa.
