Abstract:On 27 March 1971, the Nigerian National Council for Adult Education (NNCAE) was inaugurated. Several resolutions indicate the Council's conviction that adult education has become an important educational frontier for the Nigerian people. The question, however, arises whether adult education merely sprang up in Nigeria with the formation of the NNCAE, and rose to national importance just overnight. This question becomes all the more serious when it is observed that in any meaningful sense of that word, only about 10 percent of Nigerians may be said to be literate. This paper investigates the path trailed by adult education in parts of Nigeria prior to the formation of the NNCAE.
