Abstract: | The second Benue International Popular Theatre Workshop, organized under the auspices of the Benue Council for Arts and Culture, was hosted at the College of Eduation, Katsina-Ala, in January 1983. It attracted over 80 participants. Its aims were twofold: to train theatre and extension workers and students of the College of Education on how to use theatre for development purposes; to awaken the consciousness of the deprived rural masses to their plight so thay they may wish to do something to improve their condition of neglect and deprivation. After a few days of theoretical training, the participants were able to put their new knowledge into practice in four target villages selected in the Tiv-speaking area. The exercise involved village information research, scenario development, casting and rehearsals, rehearsal criticism, performance, and evaluation. A followup exercise, to ensure that action came out of the drama process and that the villagers did not relapse into passivity, was also conducted. Bibliogr. |
