Abstract:In addition to its primary task of collecting and archiving climatic data covering such weather elements as rain, temperature, radiation and pressure, the East African Meteorological Department also plays a substantial part in the analysis and interpretation of this data. Most of this work, however, appears in technical memoranda printed by the department and therefore remains unpublished. The present article is essentially a synthesis of most of this work, highlighting those aspects pertaining to light, temperature and rainfall patterns in Tanzania. The most significant synoptic models ('essentially a standard configuration of the field of pressure of flow with which is associated a characteristic weather pattern') of the tropics that feature regularly in East Africa are also described.
