Abstract:The 1970s have been characterised by growing balance-of-payments deficits, attributable to external as well as internal factors. During this decade the volume of imports expanded by an estimated 5.8% annually, while the terms of trade worsened significantly. This article's main preoccupation is the possible effectiveness of exchangerate changes in the management of the balance of payments in sub-Saharan African countries. Sections: some structural characteristics -agriculture and minerals - manufacturing and tourism - some macro-economic issues. Notes.
