Abstract:In countries where the population is predominantly illiterate, one has the concomitant curses of a low living level, hunger, disease, and a high birthrate. Operation Upgrade of Southern Africa, since its inception over ten years ago, has consistently stressed that the attainment of literacy is but the first step in any successful and progressive programme directed towards the liberation and full development of man's potential. Their journalism course is designed to meet the neo-literate's need in a practical manner. Training is given in the presentation of technical material in a factual yet interesting and easily understood way. The diverse activities of this organisation are exposed in the article. I.a. Operation Upgrade of Southern Africa, because of its two-pronged attack on illiteracy in industry and in the homelands is contributing to the closure of the communication gap between the worker in the city and his family in the homeland.
