Abstract:One major contribution of this study is that apart from the fact that it has identified the variables that affect the demand for imported food items, it has shown that the sane policy instrument will not evoke desired changes in imports for all commodities of food Although there is no known study on which the existing policies of the government are based, this study has justified some of the policies and calls for the use of others like fiscal, monetary and physical policies in the control of food imports. In all cases there is no substitute for quantity control measures in an inflationary an inequitable distribution of income systems. Notes tab.
