Abstract:This paper demonstrates how marriage payments may operate to regulate different aspects of household structure to provide adequate labour to the Barma domestic unit. Sections: background - getting married - differentials in male ability to amass marriage payments - marriage payments and Barma household structure - index of labour adequacy and bridewealth - discussion. Conclusion: among the Barma marriage payments postpone young males' marriage. It is thus legitimate to hypothesize that a latent function of marriage payments in traditional African societies is to maintain adequate labour supplies. Notes, ref., tables, rèsume en français.
