Abstract: | During the period 1960-1970 trade between Japan and South Africa increased 500%. Since 1972, Japan has been the fourth largest trade partner of South Africa. The author mentions six S.A. large-scale industrial development projects which were assured by the expansion of mineral exports to Japan, which in turn created a need for a considerable expansion of S.A.'s shipping services. Today, Japanese business is closely linked to S.A.'s massive development plans and there are more than 70 Japanese firms with representatives and offices in S.A. The author discusses examples of this (Toyota) and the consequences, in connection with the policy of apartheid as well. Finally, she gives some suggestions to the withdrawal of all Japanese private business operations in S.A. Notes; tables. |
