Abstract: | The great development in political consciousness among Tanganyikan Africans since the '30's gave rise to the Tanganyik African Association, later the Tanganyika African National Union. The activities of the T.A.N.U., by exploiting real or imaginary grievances with the government, lent themselves to agition against the Native Authorities, i.c. the Chiefs. The Government took no overt action to deal with this subversion. The Chiefs pressed for meeting of Chiefs at terri torial level as an antodote to the T.A.N.U. At first the government discouraged the idea, but after the increase of T.A.N.U. activities decided to go ahead with the idea of a chiefs meeting on a territorial level. Such meetings give certainty about Government policy and add to the Chiefs' prestige. |
