Abstract:A future for the artist in Africa today depends upon his finding a new role within his changing society. This essay is concerned with the possible options that the future seems to offer artists: What new roles can the artist find for himself? What audience, by appreciating his work, will determine its content and purpose? To what degree must he modify his natural skills to survive in what amounts to a new environment for art? How does he earn a living and how will his work reflect this new purpose and obligation? Some possible directions are suggested: The continuing tradition - The development of traditional crafts - The adaptation of technique - Production for tourists - Contemporary experiment - Local European training - The international artist.
