Abstract: | For several reasons Nigerian policy makers have not only increased investment in large scale agriculture, but have also encouraged private entrepreneurs to do so. This paper presents information on some aspects of labour absorption in selected plantations in Southern Nigeria and indicates the implications of the findings for 2 rural development strategy. To answer specifically the following questions: What has been the growth rate of labour absorption in these plantations and with what factors is tills growth associated? To what extent are the plantations labour intensive and what factors are associated with the intensity of labour use? What problems constrain labour absorption on these plantations? To what extent do the existing plantations contribute to a) the employment of educated labour, and b) the mobility of labour from the densely populated to the sparsely populated land-abundant areas of Nigeria?
