Abstract:Based on the results of recent manpower and housing sample surveys of Addis Ababa, the capital, and seventeen major towns, the author examines the demographic, employment, and earning profiles of the urban labour force. The paper is organised in six sections: employment and earnings data - the supply side of urban employment (population growth, migration patterns, labour force participation, human capital) - the profile of urban employment - distribution of hours and earnings - concluding observations.
