Abstract:The 'Labour explosion' - the lagged impact of the population explosion - is one of the major problems facing Rhodesia in the 1970s and 1980s. In this discussion, the historical record of employment growth in the Rhodesian economy is examined first; changes in the structure and character of the Black labour force are discussed; 2. the problem of unemployment and the 'employment gap' is examined and 3. in the final section there is a discussion of the main policy issues and options now confronting economic policymakers in the country.
