Abstract:Amongst the consequences of the promulgation of South Africa's 1996 Constitution is an increased ambit of the right to be legally represented for children who are the subject of legal proceedings. Child advocacy on behalf of children who come from difficult circumstances is a specialized form of practice and it is important that those who represent such children do so effectively. This article argues the need for representation by lawyers with appropriate experience and training. It further discusses the question of how to represent children effectively in the criminal courts and the children's courts, respectively. Notes, ref.
