Abstract:The recognition and reconciliation of the European and African claims and viewpoints concerning land seemed embodied in the joint K.A.N.U./K.A.D.U. declaration of Aug., endorsed by Kenyatta. But in Sept. Paul Ngei, a fellow prisoner of Kenyatta declared in several speeches that there should not be negotiating for guarantees and land titles to the European farmers. Kenyatta made only half-hearted attempts to contradict him. Meanwhile the settlement of at any rate some of the 'land-hungry' Africans under government schemes is planned. About £ 14.250.000 is to be used to settle 20.000 African families mainly on land now owned by European farmers in the Highlands. But the scheme is already considered to prove a flop and an economic fizzle.
