Abstract: | This essay, based on a review of the documentation on tribal economics in Africa, attempts to outline reported economic development within and outside the subsistence sector, in traditional African societies, to assess tribal economic attitudes disclosed, to appraise, in the light of these, probable reactions towards further economic development with reference to the technological, industrial, and commercial dimensions of urbanization. It provides not a classification of economies, which are complex in Africa, but only of economic categories. To group African peoples suitable for economic analysis Murdock's classification was used with some modification. The following categories are discerned: Subsistence; Non-monetary trading; Monetary Trading; Cash-cropping; Migrant Labour; Industrial Labour. The zonal analysis discernes; A subsistence area; Non-monetary trading areas; Mixed money-earning areas; An industrial area. Figure; tables; bibliography. French summary. |
