Abstract: | Consideration of the question as to whether the key variables governing household resource allocation in Mbere, eastern Kenya, can be identified. The starting point is Chayanov's theory of peasant household resource allocation. An outline of the main features of Chayanov's theory is followed by a brief description of Mbere and a discussion of the extent to which the theory can explain the economic behaviour of Mbere households. Finally the elements of an alternative model are suggested, which, while based on Chayanov, incorporates additional explanatory variables. Notes, fig., tabs, ref. |
