| Abstract: | The rationale of this study: 1. an empirical test of economic theories of import demand; 2. an attempt Co isolate some of the empirically relevant import demand variables for Kenya in order to better understand the forces operative in the determination of import volume for that country. The study begins with the discussion of import demand models which form the basis for the econometric analyses which follow. The regression relationships are then used to calculate income, price, and tariff elasticities for Kenya imports. These statistical results are then compared with results of other empirical studies of import demand. Finally, the derived empirical relationships are utilized for projections of import volume which are then compared with the planned import volume from the present development plan 1970-1974 and with the latest available data.
