Abstract: | The author describes how the attack of Idi Amin in 1978 on Tanzanian territory was countered by Tanzanian forces. He demonstrates, in a description of the counteroffensive of the Tanzanians in the seven months following Amin's invasion of Tanzanian territory, how the Tanzanian troops, in their composition as well as in the spirit they demonstrated, were the absolute antithesis of the Ugandans. The paper also describes the economic and political circumstances in both countries, the opposition to Amin's regime, and the interventions of the president of Libya. The Tanzanian victory, obtained by traditional handling of modern arms, was more an administrative than a military one. It contributed to national cohesion in Tanzania. - Notes. |
