Abstract:After Portugal's withdrawal on November 10th from Angola, external intervention in support of the various parties rapidly escalated. South Africa's intervention was the most direct and dramatic. An objective assessment of its actions requires a careful analysis of the actual role played by South Africa in the Angolan civil war. This paper presents such an analysis and reviews the sequence of these actions and the subsequent pattern of African response. Notes, table.
