Abstract:It seems that the motivations of the various groups in the western Sudan to unite against European imperialism mainly emanated from a mixture of desire for independence, anti-colonialism, preservation of trade interests, as well as from feelings of ethnic and religious solidarity. After an outline of this diplomatic play of establishing mutual relations, the author describes the actual formation of the alliances and the course of their actions against the French. The sociopolitical incoherence of the coalition, and the careful exploitation of this problem by the French, brought the alliance to an absolute end in 1893. Ref.
