Abstract: | The initiative of the OAU to dispatch to the Middle East a delegation headed by four African Presidents and senior Ministers followed the Eighth OAU Summit meeting in 1971. This initiative was exceptional in so far as it marked a departure from the organization's practice of not becoming involved in distinctly non-African affairs. This paper examines this ephemeral peace mission, its origin and its aftermath. Special attention is paid to its driving force, President Senghor, his motives and his activities. The paper is concluded with a brief account of the Rabat 1972 Summit meeting and its implications for future OAU involvement in Middle East affairs. Notes. |
