Abstract:On December 16, 1971, the UN General Assembly passed resolution 28 32 (XXVI), the thrust of which was to declare the 'Indian Ocean as a zone of peace'. The present article traces the circle of events in the Indian Ocean - the advent of the perceived militarisation, through the demands for demilitarisation and the responses to the initiative by the great powers as well as the littoral states. The author concludes that the pursuit of the zone of peace concept survives only verbally. In the practical sense, it has long been rendered less credible and less attainable by the twin disposition of great power search for primacy and strategic calculation of the littoral states. The concept has been overwhelmed by the various dimensions of Indian Ocean politics. Notes.
