Abstract:The author is concerned with four issues: 1. to describe in a brief way the dual characteristics of the Sudanese economy, 2. to comment on the behaviour of consumption in Sudan during the period 1955-67, 3. to calculate the average propensity to consume (i.e. the ratio of private consumption to personal disposable income), 4. to discuss some of the implications of structural dualism on consumption. Tentative conclusions: 1. the structural dualism in the Sudanese economy is manifested in the economy's high average propensity to consume, 2. efforts must be directed towards altering the sectoral and regional composition of consumption in a manner that is conducive to economic development. Only when this is done would the high average propensity to consume provide a favourable condition for private investment, and hence economic development. Notes, tables, appendix tables.
